Tetsuya Nomura Spent 3 Months Convincing SE

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 15, 2014, 12:44 AM
While Final Fantasy XV was still known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, director Tetsuya Nomura says it took three months to convince Square Enix to move the project to the next-gen consoles rather than moving it to smartphones.

Many gamers are excited to see what Final Fantasy XV will bring to the table after the disappointment that Final Fantasy XIII brought. Nomura said in an interview with Dengeki about how difficult it was to convince Square Enix not to move the project to the iOS and Android platforms.

“The project came to a standstill in 2011 when I decided to become more ambitious,” explained Nomura, “I wanted more from Final Fantasy and I knew that I would have to make a strong pitch to executives in order to move the game into the next generation. Unfortunately, they had a different definition of next generation that I did not anticipate.”

“One executive told me that this game would work much better on his iPhone,” continued Nomura, “He said in addition to reaching a larger audience, it would be easier to make on the iPhone because people do not expect much from it. I fought back saying that gamers deserve a good game and not some throwaway title that people will forget in a week. I was hit back with charts explaining how much more profitable that throwaway title would be.”

After about a month and a half of fighting with Square Enix executives, it looked like there was no chance for Nomura to win.

“It was very disheartening when some of my staff members started working on microtransactions for Final Fantasy XV,” said Nomura, “I told them that I was not giving up the fight, but they thought I had already lost. After all, I could not convince the executives that the quality of a video game is important. After two months, some of executives started to not care about our meetings. One of them even said that we could have finished Final Fantasy XV on smartphones in those two months and have started work on Final Fantasy XVI.”

Finally, after about three months, Nomura decided to make a final move designed to appeal directly to the executives. He knew there was a way to save Final Fantasy XV without damaging the potential of the game.

“Around the time of our meetings, I learned about a project called Lightning Returns,” recalled Nomura, “I said to the executives that I had a brilliant idea for that game as long as they let me have my Final Fantasy XV. In short, I became a character designer for Lightning Returns and told them that I will make any DLC costumes they want in order to make the game very profitable. I dressed her in some of the most tawdry costumes, but I did not care since it was not my game. Toriyama definitely did not have a problem with it. This is how I secured Final Fantasy XV for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.”

The interviewer then asked Nomura what he learned from this experience to which he replied, “Every time I hear the Angry Birds music, I just want to take that person’s phone away and throw it as hard as I can to the ground.”

-------------------------------------

I don't even like how Nomura says that Lightning has tawdry costumes, =.=. Well Lightning have some number of "tawdry" costumes, but Noctis' costume, too. I like his old costume better. But I like his dress suit  >.< And I kinda don't like Prompto's and Cor Leonis' costumes either. :/

Well as for Lightning it just looks kind of OOC [some of her costumes].

Well we can have some conversation going on eh? ^^;

LIGHTNING: So Noctis, it seems you owe me something, for saving your game. [pokes his head]

NOCTIS: [dozing off as he waits for his game, blinked and looks up at her. And was surprised as he saw her wearing some costume that he didn't expect she'll wear *let alone your imagination what costume she's wearing*] ....

LIGHTNING: I wore this to be able to secure your game for PS4 and XboxOne. :/

NOCTIS: ....

Me: I don't even like Nomura's words. It seems he really meant to make Lightning's costume tawdry since he's the one who admitted it. :/

Whatever. But maybe he still should be thankful because of his character, Lightning and the Lightning Returns Project, he able to convince those executive and have secured[as he said] FFXV to PS4 and xbox one and will become next gen. =.=

I kinda feel touched. Nomura said that he didn't care about Light's costumes because it wasn't his project. Porting XV on smartphones would be a stupid move. I'd prefer if they did it on PC platform. Afterall, even nextgen consoles like PS4 or XboxOne cannot compare to PC because PC gets newer upgrades every day, which means PC platform is stronger than consoles. Just saying.

TORIYAMA YOU LITTLE HENTAI XDDD Why did Nomura did this? Of course so Toriyama's little perverted imagination of his "precious Lightning" (That'so disgusting if I just imagine...) wanted something to make the game more let'say "vivid" (for his nasty hentai images) so he became what he wanted and made one of the most amaziest protagonists into a barbie doll :3
There we have it black on white :'D
Oh shit I can't believe it how right some of us just were in this case. That'so fitting 'cause it's marketng bullshit and I so wouldn't be surprised if square enix stops creating games because from what I see FF 13-2 FF13-3 FF 14, FF 15 now it's all going down. The public doesn't want to see thistuff anymore and if I can say that from FF13-2 they just rolled down badly. FF 13 was enough but no. We needed a sequal for nothing and nothing at all.
Haha, let them be let them play.
ANd btw Normura was forced to do this and I guess he didn't like it, that's why he sounds kind of rude. I mean who wouldn't?

hahaha agree! xD toriyama i can't believe have a typing to nomura's design, just because lightning became popular to fans and gave him money. =.= doesn't he have a family yet? But I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't yet.
Anyway tbh, Idk if this news is even true. ^^;
But I agree at what you said, if SE continued this, fans wouldn't be interested in FF anymore, or maybe it could change. Since I tihnk they're trying to make ff next gen. or whatever they call it. Like that Agni's Philosophy looks interesting if they ever made it a game and if so, I think it would be on Ps6 or whatver. lol =.= just look how many years we've waited for ffxv and it became ps4. But I suddenly doubted this news, because: #1. It doesn't sound like SE if they wanted FFXv to be on phone. #2. FF13 was ps3 then versus on phone? it just doesn't sound right. lol that's why I think this news was only made up so ffxv and lr will be a 'talk' and issue on public. and now we're just talking about it. =.= and why would Nomura say such thing on LR right? they should support each other, since they're working on 'one' company and game, Square Enix and Final Fantasy.

Haha, of course not... japanese old grandpa... Well we all know what this means :3
It could change or they just go down with creating games because of money loss ~~
Well they should start work on it soon or well.. XDD The only solution as 25 years ago DUN DUN DUUUUN
Well, who knows their marketing bullshit it all sounds like pasta to me XD But since I actually give a shit on what they do as long as they finally release some games which are good to play :D I even stopped caring about the stories XDDDD
Of couse they are attention whores those people XDD

why would they even make the game for the phone??? I feel like it would take so much memory in the phone tho like this game would look so much better on the PS4 I just hope they keep it that way cause' I have a feeling they're going to change their minds OxO I just wish the game could come out already asdfghjlkgff Rage

The fact Nomura had to resort to Cloud's FF7 costume to help appeal his case tells me he knows damn well how much gamers want a FF7 game. Still, after reading about the executives and their need to make a quick buck, I can understand why Nomura is veeeeery hesitant to even touch FF7 for awhile.

Tbh, I am not even sure if this news is true or just made up so people will still continue on talking about FFxV and LR, since LR will be out on February. ^^;
